LA II Semester Syllabus and Class Guidelines
Class Guidelines and Syllabi (not syllabusses) January 22nd, 2008

Note: You can be yourself in here! But since we must all work together to accomplish the common goal of becoming better readers, writers, and thinkers, please observe the following guidelines.{
FGENERAL GUIDELINES
1. No late homework accepted
2. Homework is assigned every night. I tend not to give homework over the weekends except for long term projects.
3. Students will be given a calendar detailing all course work and homework for two weeks at a time. This calendar is also available online at www.awolf.edhs.org.
4. Grades are available online through the Aeries program. They are updated every Friday by 3 p.m. They will also be periodically posted in class via student ID number.
5. Students should keep track of all graded assignments in a 3-ring binder in order to compare them to posted grades.
6. SSR (Silent Reading) is done every day for the 1st 10-15 minutes of class. Students who choose to “borrow” books, do homework, sleep, or talk will NOT get class credit for SSR.
7. The McDougal-Littell (“Big Lit Book”) may stay at home for homework purposes. All other texts (SSR book, vocab book, and/or other assigned texts) should be brought to class on designated days.
8. Absent (make-up) work is the student’s responsibility. Students have a total of two days after return to turn in all make-up work that was not pre-assigned. If a student will be missing more than one consecutive day of school, he or she should contact me to get any missing assignments.
9. I am available for tutoring at lunch every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Study sessions will be scheduled for major tests and written assignments.
10. Tardies will be enforced:
#1-2 = FREE #3-4 = one hour, after school detention
#5 and up = referral to attendance director and Saturday Work Program
* Tardies will “start over” at the semester (20 weeks)

This year we will focus on the following types of writing:
* controversial issue/persuasion * research * analysis
* creative * quickwrites * publishing
(SPEAKING(
Each student will be required to participate in class on a daily basis as called upon. In addition, group presentations will be assigned. This is a safe place to speak. If any student chooses to make it uncomfortable for another classmate to speak, he or she will be removed from class discussion.
«TECHNOLOGY«
Each student will be required to use a word processing format to prepare typed, MLA-formatted assignments. The school does have a computer lab in the library which is available for student use. Students may also use the classroom computer outside of instructional hours. Computer access will also be valuable for research purposes. * Please note: If you need to print a paper from an email account, this must be done prior to class. I will not print student essays or accept essays which are not formatted correctly.
ÀSSRÀ
“Sustained Silent Reading” will be done every day for the 1st 10-15 minutes of class. Appropriate reading materials include non-instructional texts (fiction and nonfiction), magazines, and/or newspapers. SSR is NOT a time to complete homework, sleep, stare at a single page of a book, “borrow” a book for credit or talk. Class credit will be given to students who conscientiously choose something to read and actively read every period.
_PRESENTATIONS_
Each student will be required to add to class discussion. Participation and input is a must. Projects will be announced as time permits.
_VOCABULARY_
Students must purchase a copy of the 10th grade vocab book from the front office. These cost $20. We will be working through this PSAT preparatory book throughout the year. The deadline to obtain this book is .
AEXTRA CREDITA
I assign extra credit periodically during the first part of a grading period. I will not be assigning any extra credit directly before grades are posted. Students should look at extra credit as an opportunity to “bank” points, not a last ditch effort to salvage a grade.
* This is a college prep course and will be taught to the standards of the State of California as well as the PYLUSD.
